Away In A Manger

Words: Stanzas one and two, anonymous (1885); Stanza three, anonymous (1892); Tune: MUELLER, James R. Murray (1887)

First Verse:

Away in a manger, No crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus Laid down his sweet head;

The stars in the sky Looked down where he lay, The little Lord Jesus, Asleep on the hay.

Second Verse:

The cattle are lowing, The Baby awakes, But little Lord Jesus, No crying he makes;

I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky, And stay by my cradle Till morning is nigh.

Third Verse:

Be near me Lord Jesus, I ask thee to stay Close by me forever, And love me, I pray;

Bless all the dear children In thy tender care, And fit us for heaven To live with thee there.

Away in A Manger

(Smyrna Baptist Church near Ozark, Missouri) A few weeks ago, State of the Ozarks recorded Elias Tucker (Pastor Dale Grubaugh) singing as his wife Dannette played the piano.

Few sounds evoke memories of tradition, church, fellowship and the holiday season more than a strong voice and unadorned but beautiful piano playing.

As the music sounded out in the century-old church of rural Parch Corn Holler, a little bit of Ozark history was preserved.
