Jamie Haage Nominated

(Branson, MO) “I was shocked. I really was,” notes Haage, veteran Branson entertainer and lifelong Taney County resident. “And receiving male vocalist of the year nomination? I’m more proud of that than anything else because music is even more of who I am than comedy.”

Multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and comedian, Haage has performed as the orange-suited “Jim Dandy” for years — and is a mainstay of the Grand Country Jubilee family. His career began while still in high school at The Collins Family Show in 1983, followed with The Wilkinson Brothers, The Plummer Family Show, then Silver Dollar City. “Yep, closed a lot of them down,” notes Haage, tongue-in-cheek.

He is nominated for male vocalist of the year, entertainer of the year and comedian of the year (a shared nomination with Mike Patrick) by the Branson Terry Awards. “A lot of our comedy overlaps so there is a lot in common but we have differences out on the edges that shape it into different things.”

“You hope for a good reaction, obviously. Performing can really take you away from where you are so that you’re not thinking about your problems — just like being an audience member. So it’s almost two sides of the same coin.

“I know you always say you are glad the audience is there but I’d really like them to realize how grateful I am they are there. It means more than just a show. It’s a major blessing to us and it would be neat if they could understand how important that is.”

Off stage, Haage enjoys spending time on the lakes. “I’ve really developed a hobby of cooking, now, that I didn’t expect,” he furthers. “I just like to do normal stuff.” He is also owner of Haage Music Productions.

Big Clayton, Piano Man

(Branson, MO) Pianist Clayton Watson has been seen by thousands, playing at the Branson Landing, working as music director for the Jim Bakker Morningside venue near Blue Eye, Missouri, and now playing traditional hymns for Presley Theatre guests.

“I feel like it is a calling,” comments Watson. “Branson is a very special place. This town has grown from family and faith. All the guests [at Presleys’ Theatre] know the original songs like I’ll Fly Away or Old Rugged Cross and they sing along. I feel pretty blessed.”

Watson, known by many simply as Big Clayton performs daily at the Branson Landing as well as Presleys’ Country Jubilee.

Heart For Community: Fat Daddy’s BBQ

(Forsyth, MO) Fat Daddy’s BBQ is a center of the Forsyth community, an example led by its owner, John Winkert. Winkert served 27 1/2 years in fire service, ending that career as fire chief of Peculiar, Missouri. He then served as paramedic in Taney County until an injury forced his retirement in 2007. Today, he is known as much for his community support as for his restaurant. “It was a hobby that went wild,” he shares. “I was smoking meats for church functions and family get togethers and one thing led to another.”

On Winkert’s immediate calendar, he will be providing BBQ for the Taney County Republican Committee (March 28), the Forsyth Bluegrass & Gospel Festival (April 5), and the Bikers’ Rally in Shadowrock Park (April 27). Also, Winkert recently coordinated ambulance transport for a local stroke victim to be transported to Joplin for appropriate treatment.

After years of service as fireman and paramedic, it is obvious John Winkert still has a great big heart for his fellow man.
