Ozark Mudstomp Music

(Eureka Springs, AR) Curtis Copeland, GIS coordinator for the City of Branson and co-producer of Bald Knobber: The Movie, is making his own mark in the Ozark music scene as executive of Mudstomp Records.

“We started the record label five years ago,” says Copeland, “because we were fans of a new genre of music that is becoming extremely popular in the Ozarks that was known as the ‘Ozark Stomp.’ It’s like bluegrass with mostly acoustic string instruments but with a faster tempo, more of a kick.”

“Most of the fans are diehards — kind of the younger group focused on the simple life, getting out in nature, going camping. It’s part hillbilly, part hippie. It is more than a genre of music. It is a lifestyle.”

Mudstomp Records first band South By Southwest was picked up by Nashville record company. “We felt pretty good about helping support them,” says Copeland. Mudstomp label currently with a number of unique bands, including Mountain Sprout, Whistle Pigs and Tyrannosaurus Chicken.

The recent Ozark Mountain Music Festival which was held January 24-26 at Eureka Spring’s Basin Park Hotel featured a number of Mudstomp or Ozark Stomp bands.

“Eureka Springs is a central point for the style that we helped get started,” muses Copeland. “And Eureka is a pretty unique place, a creative center with a different mindset. Some even say the place has its own magnetic field.”
